They did force 5 punts yesterday, bringing their season total up to 15, so they doubled their per game average in punts forced thanks to playing a less talented squad.
Once agin BYU gave up over 170 rushing yards (242 to be exact) for the 5th straight game. They’ve also lost the time of possession battle for the 5th straight game, this time by a whopping 9 minutes. The defense ceded 27 first downs, including 3 first downs on a drive where Toledo was pinned on their own one yard line. To their credit, the defense got two takeaways, but other than that, Toledo’s offense did basically whatever it wanted in the second half.
The offense has their own issues independent of the defense, but BYU’s defense rarely does anything to help them aside from takeaways, which are not reliable by nature. It’s hard to score when your defense is constantly losing the field position battle and the opposing defense has time to rest.
If Kalani Sitake has a modicum of coaching acumen in him, if he learned anything during his time at Utah, then he should to pull a Bronco 2010 and take over the defense. Kalani hasn’t earned the right to play CEO and turn the coaching keys over to Tuiaki, and the Tuiaki doesn’t deserve them right now anyways.
