Let’s go through the various categories.

Enrollment - yep. 32,000 strong
Alumni - yep. 400,000 strong
Program history - yep.
Facilities - yep. 60,000 plus capacity. Always one of the highest attendance numbers in the West.
Fan base - yep. At least 5,000 fans to away games. 10,000 to 15,000 fans depending on opponent.
TV eyes - yes, or otherwise no deal from ESPN

Coaching - suspect. Need to pay more.
Support from school’s sponsor - suspect.
Recruiting/players - suspect, should be better, but this is probably a reflection on support by sponsor and coaching.

But said sponsor wants BYU to be perceived as P5 without giving the support or demanding the results. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Summary - BYU has all the makings of a P5 program but without the necessary support from a school that doesn’t want to enter into “an arms race”. Bottom line - either fans accept mediocrity or BYU lines up with a G5 conference. The definition of insanity is to keep on doing the same thing and expect different results. Our schedules are getting harder in the next few years.

It pains me to write this, but it is the gospel truth. We cannot expect to have winning seasons with the kind of support the program is getting.
