I think I am a little mentally ill that way...
First year, my costs were around $60 a lb and I sold it for about $7.50 a lb. 🙂 That's losing money big time.
Next few years my costs are lower, but part of what is expensive is I don't mess with liability risk, so I spend $350 a year for business insurance. I probably won't need it, but not going to chance it for a hobby. Gotta protect the assets...
When I catch swarms and sell them, I make about $150 per colony. Much easier to make money from bees than from honey. A couple of years ago, I think I sold 11 swarms, so after my first year, I more than break even with the swarms.
To make money with honey, you really need to get in the range of 20 plus colonies and do a lot of raising of your own queens. Even then, it is still just hobby money. You don't want to start beekeeping to make money - it is way too much work unless you are fascinated by it. Kinda like golf - you always think you can do better next time and there are so many mysteries...If your local area has a pollinator that has lots of cheap honey for sale (Bairds in Orem?) they sell it for $2 or $3 a pound and have so much of it...
Funny thing is I am closing in on 1 million youtube view on my channel. I get $100 bucks most months and I use that to buy more equipment. This year our freezer died and I need one for freezing the frames (to kill bugs) before I store them, so the business bought us a new deep storage freezer...Seems like there is always something...
