The company risked nothing. It s main $ source was govt. Funding (taxes). Then
Private donations that were written off. The company has made $ while doing the research. The researchers have made money and can continue to do so. If the company found no cure it would have still been profitable as long as it could solicit those two sources of income.
If the company had business loans or the owners had put up their own $or it was publicly traded and their was stock. I would agree with your pov.
