I always gave Kalani the benefit of the doubt. I gave him a pass for the Detmer years. I gave him a pass last year b/c of injuries and Grimes first year as an OC.
But I always felt like this season was the one where we needed to turn the corner and see an identity, some consistency, etc.
We're not seeing it. Injuries aren't an excuse to lose to USF or Toledo. And wins and losses aren't even the important thing here. I see no improvements in our game planning, in game adjustments, discipline, etc. I'm ok with giving new coordinators a shot, but they should be trending up and they are not.
Tuiaki doesn't seem to be learning or willing to adjust. A lot of us have blamed the scheme on lack of personnel, but if that's the case then we need to hold the coaches accountable for not recruiting the right personnel.
Grimes game plans are really poor and his playing calling in critical moments has been poor too (with the exception of Tennessee OT). There have been glaring weaknesses on the offense that he has been extremely slow to fix. 3rd/4th and short conversion has been horrible. At USF we finally saw some QB sneaks on 3rd and short and they worked. It took him half a season and a bye week to finally figure that out? Redzone offense is a problem but it's not as obvious of a fix. I know there are plenty of coordinators who struggle with it at different points in their career.
