a few things I would try
- download from the camera's USB port, not a card reader
- take sample shots on a different card and see if those download and open properly; if so the first card is the problem
- could try a disk repair utility on the problem SD card
- some cameras have two card slots and record each image in different formats (RAW + jpg); probably a longshot here, but worth checking
