Four years is sufficient for most programs but not with BYU

With other college programs I would agree that four years is a sufficient time period to measure how a coach is doing with their program-but not with BYU.  Judging Kalani at the four year mark is not fair to him or his players.  Here are my reason as to why Kalani desering or more time.

1.  Kalani was hired around December 19, 2015.  That gave Kalani and his new staff about 6 weeks to assess, reassess, meet, retain, and offer new recruits scholarships before signing day.  That is a tall order for any coaching staff.

2.  There is some dencent talent in the 2016 class such as Troy Warner, Aleva Hifo, Max Tooley, Jared Hall, Keanue Saleapage, Jackson Kaufusi and several others.  I give Kalani credit for bring in that quality of a class in such a short period of time.  However, much of that class went and served missions.  For example, Max Tooley, Jared Hall and several other good talented players are only RS Freshmen this year.  the 2016 class is all back but are just beginning their college football careers.

3.  The 2017 recruiting class has talent too and most should now be home off their missions.  There is a good chance the majority of this class will play in 4 games or less and then RS this year.  At least that is my guess.  Also, let's not forget about Langi Tuifua who was a 4 star DE out of Bingham High School who turned down Oregon to come play for Kalani.  Sadly, he was forced to retire from football due to a neck injury.  That was a big loss to the D-line.

4.  the 2018 recruiting class is either currently serving a mission, are RS freshmen this year or sophomores in the program if they came straight from high school and played more than 4 games-such as Zach Wilson and Gunner Romney.

5.  the 2019 recruting class are either on missions or true freshmen this year.  Other than players who transferred into the program, no freshmen are playing to my knowledge.  Also, the JC transfer, Ty'Son Williams injury was a killer.

6.  Can you imangine how long the line is for football coaches that face the prospect of working all year to secure players to come play for them and then once the player is signed, the player leaves for two years to serve a mission?  I bet the line is not that long. And for the record, serving a two year mission is the correct and best decision these young men could ever make in their lives if you asked me.  But the result of a two year mission is a player who, in most cases, is not ready to contribute out on the field for at least three years after they signed their LOI.  So when you look at recruting in this lens, year three of a BYU recuit who serves a mission, places them at either their RS freshman or sophomore year in school.  How can anyone truely judge a coach who's players are still by and large underclassmen.

7.  There is talent in the program and in the missionary pipeline but a good chunk of "Kalani's recruits" are still young to the program.  A BYU Head Coach deserves at minimum five years to build their program.  People can argue that the signs are already there.  A program on the rise does not lose to lesser talent.  I agree.  Those kinds of losses should not be happening.  I would argue that a program not on the rise would not beat the likes of Arizona, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Wisconsin, Tennessee and USC.  A program crashing would just not win these games.  There are too many big wins to call it luck.

In my mind it's a no brainer, Kalani stays for the 5th year of his contract.  The real conundrum will be how can Kalani continue to recruit and bring in more top talent if the school Administration is showing signs of no confidence in their head coach by not resigning him.  The result will be many of the top 2020 recruits who are currently leaning towards signing with BYU will just move on and sign with another school elsewhere.  Now that's the real concern for the furture of the football program if you asked me.
