BYU tickets are not just for rich people
I am a season ticket holder and for the rare games I have to miss, I should not be guilted into giving them away to fans who choose not to save up like we do. I did miss last night but I gave my 4 tickets to family due to their help with my pregnant wife, a sick kid, and my Crohn’s disease. I absolutely wanted to be there, since I have gone after the week of surgeries, during 5 years with a feeding tube, and when my disease was flaring so bad I was in fear the entire game I would not eat that day out of fear of needing a bathroom immediately. Still, I went to all but 3-4 games in 15 years and I saved to buy those tickets.
If I sell them to help me recoup the money, I am not a bad fan. It is a huge sacrifice for most fans. The price of tickets is only a small part of the cost. We have to drive around 160 round trip every game,(gas/time), food cost, and many other hundreds of dollars all to support our team. If one can’t make it, selling our tickets allows us to pay for the next season’s tickets. Why can’t the other fans pay the price for a game?
We are not fair weather fans or disloyal for choosing to sell. If other BYU fans want to go, then they can pay just like we do. I had family in my 4 seats but if they couldn’t go, I could easy have sold my tickets for $80-120 per ticket. We are not rich or wealthy, we just budget and save each year.
Plus, BYU is ridiculous for scheduling a home game during the opening day of the rifle deer hunt. A lot of us deer hunt and I was surprised at home many still made it. They usually do a Friday game, an away game, or have a bye during opening weekend. That meant a lot of students and families gave up their tickets to go on a traditional family outing that happens once a year and supplies a lot of food when successful. If I had drawn my tag, I would definitely gone hunting, especially with 3 straight losses. Some of my greatest memories were made with my dad while hunting. BYU was lucky to get 60,000 with both the weather, the hunt, and 3 straight bad losses.
