All the comments for other schools were BS. As noted,
Oklahoma lost to Kansas. Baylor was a common opponent. The Baylor coach was asked which was the better team. He said thst they felt they could win the game until late in the fourth quarter. He said that by halftime against BYU they just wanted the game to be over. He also said BYU was the better team. Oklahoma was offered the chance to play BYU in a pre-season bowl game that fall. Switzer turned it down. That says a lot.

Washington was really good but it was a down year for the conference. Besides UW only USC ended the season ranked, and UW lost to USC. So, while their schedule was tougher, it wasn't that tough.

Also, BYU had a 25 game win streak going, and played some good teams. Sorry, but no team seemed invincible that year. When you combine the 25 game streak with comparison of same opponents, and what coaches were saying, it ws no contest. BYU was no. 1 in all the polls.
