I definitely expect that the kinetic energy was likely 1/4 of that max, and yes,
the helmet would break and dissipate much of that energy in its own deformation/breaking, but the point was that a swinging helmet is a nontrivial amount of kinetic energy and because of its domed shape would results in a fairly small point of contact, thus a very high pressure concentration at the small contact surface.
