That said, we just need an eight-team playoff. All of the P5 conference champions need to be included, and at least one of the top G5s should be included as well as a bunch of one-loss teams every year.

Right now 75% of observers have the nagging feeling that at least one or two very strong teams that may well have taken out the eventual "champion" just didn't get a shot, and hear that those teams didn't "deserve" a shot. I don't care who "deserves" anything, I want to know which rhinoceros beetle wins if you put a bunch of them into a battle situation together. Which battle-bot survives if the best battle-bots go at it and start tearing each other limb from limb. Not which one "deserved" what.

And eight-team playoff would reduce the nagging feeling to maybe 15% of observers, which isn't perfect, but is far better than a supermajority+ who still "don't know who would have won" in a game between the "national champion team" and some other team at the end of the season.
