Because beating teams that we don't normally beat can be used for recruiting.
Wisconsin won 8 games last year. BYU beat them on the road marking only the 2nd time in history that BYU beat an 8 win or better P5 team on the road.

He then follows it up with a win @ Tennessee. If Tennessee wins 2 out of their next 3 games they finish with a 7-6 record. This would mean that BYU had road wins vs. winning P5s in back to back years for the first time in history. It would also be the only road wins over winning P5s in the last 2 decades.

We beat Boise this year. Unlike our previous Boise wins we beat a Boise team that will likely win 10 games or more this year. BYU is 4-38 in the last 20 seasons vs. teams that win 10 games or more. There are at least 38 programs with a better record than us against such competition over that span.

If USC beats UCLA and wins their bowl game, they will finish with 9 wins. BYU has 3 wins total over 9+ win P5 teams. Unfortunately, we have 37 losses against such teams and possibly 38 if Washington wins out.

The Wisconsin, Tennessee, Boise, and USC wins can change our recruiting pitch. Instead of saying, "Come to BYU and you will get to play some of the best teams in the country." Kalani can say "Come to BYU and you will get to BEAT some of the best teams in the country." He's already proven it.

While we are not going to recruit at a top P5 level it is not unreasonable to expect some recruiting improvement. Which may provide enough depth to provide a little more consistency on the field.
