Not just the ones who did bad things...
There were some questionable things about how some kids were recruited, who paid for them to come to campus, etc... Nothing to do with the kids' character or that these were bad kids, but simply that they had no GPA to speak of and they were just phenomenal athletes. They had no chance of succeeding at BYU beyond rudimentary classes. I know specific situations that I just cannot elaborate on, nor should I.

It made certain Vice Presidents very upset. I really feel that even if Crowton kept winning 12 games a season he would have lost his job based on the lack of control he had of the program. The off field issues and the lack of respect for the academics and honor code at the university was just too apparent.

This is why I think Bronco was such an attractive candidate and why his five priorities resonated so much with decisionmakers at the time. BYU wanted someone who was going to make the honor code and academics a very clear part of the recruiting pitch.

Now, even though I say this, I want you to know that I think Gary Crowton is a good man. I just don't think he was the right fit for BYU.
