Based only on the reported information, principal probably thought he was being merciful or trying to gain some trust. But breaking rules to try be ‘friends’ with students is the wrong idea.
If the policy stinks, then take that up with the school district.
You can make your choices, but you can’t choose your consequences for the choices.
