I am so happy professional sports are not decided on that sort of ridiculousness.
The true answer is that there is no correct way to decide which team is best. So humans do the best they can. Even in a sport like the NFL the best team often does not win. But the team who played the best and got the right breaks wins. Or in other words you actually decide it on the field.
