For the bowls that have contracts with certain conferences, the champion of that conference goes to the bowl. (No change.)
But, IF the champion of the conference goes to the CFP, the "runner-up" or replacement team MUST have a record of at least 9-3, and/or be ranked in the CFP Poll's Top 25. Period. If there is no other team in the conference that meets that criteria, the bowl committee can invite someone from another conference, that fits the criteria.
This article blew my mind! #3 Clemson is the ONLY ranked team in the ACC. Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Pitt are the three next best teams, all from the Coastal Division, at 7-3.
• Virginia (5-2 in ACC) plays Liberty this weekend, and then Virginia Tech.
• Va Tech (4-3) plays Pitt, and then obviously Virginia.
• Pitt (4-3), after Va Tech, plays Boston College.
In the Atlantic Division, Wake Forest is technically also 7-3, but they are only 3-3 in conference.
