Mired 7.5 games behind the dodgers, they employed an elaborate sign stealing scheme where a player and coach sat in the center field clubhouse with a telescope set on the Catcher and buzzed the signs into the dugout which a team electrician specially rigged for the scheme. The dugout catcher then signaled to signs into the hitters. The giants even traded for a player from the pirates and never played him. They traded for him because he was good with a telescope.
Giants went 51-18 after employing the scheme culminating in the shot heard round the world, Bobby Thompson’s home run that defeated the Dodgers to win the pennant. Involved giants admitted to the scheme 50 years later.
