It is the <$500 laptops that make people think Apple is so great.
Get her a $700+ laptop with good specs/Battery and somewhat light weight and she will be good for life.
(No need for a solid video card unless graphic design, but then a desktop may be on order)

HP Spectre for $700 - Good deal, will last 4 - 5 years. (1080p, 256GB, i5 processor)

Lenovo Idea Pad $850 - Awesome deal, tempted to buy it right now. (4K resolution, 512 GB, Strong Processor)

ASUS ZenBook $700 (AMD for a better graphics card , 1080p, 512 GB, and Graphics card for decent video editing.)

I think any of those 3 laptops would do just fine and I would buy them for a niece or nephew. Keep reading if you want to read my Apple rant.

For school I got a Macbook Pro for $2000, and it ran 50% of the software I needed to run, was slower than my friends computers that were 10-20% cheaper, (But man did it kick that $500 dollar computer's butt), and outside of a nice touchpad, just seemed to be inferior. It was so bad I switched iPhone to Android, iPad to Fire tablet(and rooted it), and macbook to HP, and not only do I spend 15-40% less on everything, but my new laptop has lasted 7 years, One Plus 3 phone 5 years, and FireHD 10" tablet is new at 2 years.

Cost was $650, $400 (+$55 screen repair), and $110. Total = $1200
For the same total price I could get a current Macbook Air that would last 4 years, or spend $500 extra and get the Macbook Pro that would last 6-7 years.

My guess is because Apple doesn't sell low end (junk market), customers are always happy that their purchase typically works and is decent to great quality. Whereas if your company buys you a dell, there is a chance you just got a piece of junk that will never work right.
