For the first 3 movies, Jackson prepared every scene months in advance. For the
Hobbit, he was forced to often figure out what they were going to shoot, how they were going to shoot it, and write the lines for the actors only a day in advance. That ability to prepare ahead versus working on the fly was the primary reason why the Hobbit was terrible. You can’t go on location if you haven’t even written the dialogue and key plot points to be shot the next day. You won’t even know where to go film, let alone organize the army of cast and crew to get to those locations. Peter Jackson did the best with what he could.
