turns out the fax machine hasn't worked for years and nobody even knew. I had to go in search of another fax machine somewhere in the building that I could use.

all for something that could easily have been scanned/emailed but the other party (Thrift Savings Plan, the military's 401k processor) is stuck firmly in the 90's.
