Option #1 - look into counseling.
If that doesn't work for you - then I'd work on helping him with some of the stuff that a counselor might work with him on. I'd start with doing some mindfulness activities with him (there's a ton on the internet you can look up) and I'd even recommend taking 15-20 minutes a day writing in a journal - just basically free-writing what he's feeling and thinking about.
