I don't know if this has been posted or discussed but this segment compared the popularity of the college game in the first half of the 1900s to how boring Pro Football was at that time. Pro Football just couldn't catch on. In the late 60's early 70's it shifted because the Pro's became more exciting with trick plays and the passing game. College football refused to change until LaVell Edwards and BYU came along. It talks about BYU and their passing game for over 3 minutes. It includes Mike Holmgren talking about the passing game and features McMahon, Young, Bosco and Detmer. It shows the hail mary at the '80 Holiday Bowl, the Michigan game in '84 and the Miami game in '90. Some quotes from it:
"Even with all of the old school values entrenched in the college game, there actually was one outlier...BYU's LaVell Edwards."
"BYU was slinging it and it was crazy how different it was."
"You had never seen it before in the college game."
"What's amazing about this is that BYU become the place for a hot shot quarterback to go. It's not USC, and it's not Texas or Alabama, they go to Provo."
"You've got this razzmatazz in 1984...They are the national champs and the old school teams are starting to adjust to this."
This was fun to see. It brought back a lot of memories as someone who started watching BYU football during Gifford Nielson's junior year. It's hard to explain the excitment to someone who didn't experience Nielson, Wilson, McMahon, Young, and Bosco live. For years after Sarkasian, I longed for BYU to be the exciting passing team once again. This piece made me realize that will never happen. Part of what made it fun was nobody was doing it like we did and it was revolutionary and exciting. Now days you even have LSU and Alabama airing it out like we once did. I highly recommend watching this segment. Brings back a lot of great memories and give a great perspective on how important BYU was to college football.
