It hasn’t been so derided because it was “cool” to think it was bad.
It’s become so criticized because the note you watch or think about it, the worse it gets and the more you realize how much of a slap in the face it was to the mythology, storytelling, and fan of Star Wars.

I think the nerds and purists forgot that it's supposed to be entertainment, and that some things won't make sense.
