that the effects of dark matter, whatever it may be, are well studied, but it has been a key feature for sometime that dark matter is required as a scaffold for galaxy formation. Now that it may not be required for all galaxy formation, the assumptions about what dark matter is and how it operates is in question.

Not exactly settled science.
