While only two of the top threads are about Utah right now, I’ve seen it go as high as 7 or 8 in the last few months.

This thread is the perfect example of what I’m talking about. A fanatical cougar fan posts either his/her joy at a Ute loss, or they talk about why Utah sucks, or they commit to ignoring the Ute posters. This is typically followed by the usual witty and well-written comments from many of the Utes in this board who, like myself, enjoy these conversations for their pure entertainment. The stuttering and often-juvenile responses are pure gold.

Sure, occasionally there will be the occasional “Dumb Yewt” who jumps on and spews complete and utter garbage, and it’s equally fun to watch Cougar fans cut them to pieces. For the most part, however, I find the Utah fans on this board to be well spoken and connoisseurs of human folly, much like myself.

Look, I grew up a die hard BYU fan, attending every game with my pops. I grew tired of the false sense of superiority that I observed from many BYU fans and alumni and I’ve become a fair weather fan at best these days. I’d like to think that my transition has given me a bit of objectivity as I now enjoy a good Utah game every bit as much as a good BYU game. I root for both teams, and, for me, even the rivalry game is more about good football (fairly lopsided these last several years) than about who wins or loses.

Objectively speaking, what I see, and enjoy, most in this board are the often comical attempts to prove, typically using emotional arguments, that BYU athletics are somehow still superior to Utah, or that Utah is not worthy of praise or consideration, or that Utah is some sort of backwater school that only graduates morons good for pumping gas.

I can tell you this, as a guy with family who wear red and family who wear blue (some family who contribute enough to be in the coaches circle, and other “in-the-know” groups at BYU). Most either ignore cougarboard completely, or just chuckle and roll their eyes whenever it’s mentioned. The audacity of some of the comments on this board are only good for entertainment value.
