I work in a Bay Area tech company and have a decent amount of stock (not a ton)
The company has IPO'd so my vested stock is liquid. The stock price hasn't been amazing, but also not terrible. High enough to be in the positive. I haven't made a ton of money off the initial offering of stock I received. But I get stock refreshers with yearly reviews and with promotions which est quarterly over four years. I now have four or five batches of stock that are all vesting quarterly. With those refreshers all compounding on top of each other I'm making a good amount above what I would have been making if I took more salary elsewhere.

Part of the ability to have that happen depends on what your company's policies are and how likely it is that you'll get promoted. Just some food for thought.
