With college football now officially over and looking at final records and polls... it struck me just how bizarre this season was for BYU. The ultimate Jekyll-Hyde season.
Some of our best wins of the Independence era...
@ Tennessee. The Vols ended the season with an 8-5 record (5-3 in SEC), winning 6 in a row down the stretch including their bowl game over Indiana. For the Cougars to beat an 8-5 SEC team on the road in a storied venue like Neyland Stadium is nothing short of big time.
USC. The Trojans ended up 8-5 but went 7-2 in the Pac-12. Only Oregon and Utah had better Pac-12 records.
Boise State. Despite getting smoked by Washington in their bowl, the Broncos ended the season 12-2 and ranked #23 in the final AP poll. Huge win for BYU.
@ Utah State. USU took a big step back this year (7-6 record) but BYU desperately needed a win. They could not allow the Aggies to win 3 in a row. To end that streak in dominant fashion was much needed.
And some of the worst losses of the Independence era...
@ Toledo. The Rockets ended up 6-6 and just 3-5 in the MAC! This was an abysmal loss for BYU. The Cougars have no business losing to a team that went 3-5 in the MAC. Inexcusable.
@ South Florida. USF ended the season 4-8 and went 2-6 in the AAC. What a horrible, horrible loss for the Cougars.
And after winning 5 in a row and seeming like they had momentum..... the Cougars finish the season with a total dud, losing their final two games, both in frustrating fashion: one game where the offense didn't show up (3 points against SDSU) and one game where the defense didn't show up (Cole McDonald threw for 493 yards!)
What a wild, inconsistent, ultimately frustrating season. The high high's were matched by some really low low's. JEKYLL... HYDE.
