was almost always playing two or three G5's who were better than most P5's in the country. In let's say 2014, BYU loses 4 straight, all to G5's, and finished with a bowl loss to another G5. Those are the only teams they lost to that year. G5's.

It's not about P5 vs G5. It's about the caliber of teams on the schedule. We all know not all P5's are created equal. It's not fair to say our season becomes harder if we face Rutgers, GT, and Kansas instead of UCF, Boise, and Cincy.

P5's on the schedule did not cause BYU to go unranked this year. If they beat 3 more G5's, which all should have been wins, they probably finish ranked.
In 2016 BYU beat 3 P5's and a ranked Boise. They lost to 3 P5's by a total of 7 pts. I don't think it's simply because they were P5's that BYU lost. BYU was right there with the ability to win every single game. One play away in all of them. Don't blame the loss on the opponent being P5. The old MWC Utah and TCU were better than these opponents. Current teams the last few years like Cincy, Memphis, UCF, SDSU, Boise, USU, AF, Navy and others are all better than that WV team and that UCLA team.

Don't make it so black and white. BYU started finishing unranked because Bronco started getting more of his own recruits on the field and wasn't filling out rosters very well. That stretch of recruiting from 09-13 killed BYU.

BYU didn't lose to UVA in 13 because they're a P5. They lost because they passed the ball 40 times in a monsoon and made some bad decisions.
