He knew what James had to pretty much wager everything to to win. He also knew
if James wagered everything and was right there was nothing Ken could do to stop him. His only chance was for James to get it wrong. If James gets it wrong Ken doesn't need to wager anything to win.
There was no reason for him to wager anything. As the OP said he could have wagered a little bit and ensured the same possible outcome from his end, but he'd only be winning points.
