Probably a roth because he's likely not making too much right out the chute so
he may be in a lower tax bracket even if he's still single. If he's married and/or has any kids, he'd likely benefit from a Roth as well.

And anyone who doesn't think that taxes are just going to keep rising over the coming years due to inflation and lack of control with federal spending, combined with a lower reproduction rate, is fooling themselves. Might as well just pay the taxes now.
