Know what that really means for the teams? What are the ramifications of going independent?

I know Timpanogos's coach is also stepping down, but am unsure of why these schools want to go independent in football and what impact that will have on the teams.

Anyone have more knowledge about this, or insight?
I know Odgen tried this a few years back and it seems like it was a disaster...
