they recently posted that two public defender positions are open. I don't do criminal defense and I'm not actively looking, but I do keep my eye on job postings just to see what's out there. And I saw this one. Like most, it is useless to me, but someone might benefit from me passing on the knowledge.

I have a good friend that is a public defender here and he is able to have his own paying clients in addition to the indigent that he represents through his public defender contract. So the public defender contract makes a nice base that people can add to.
