studios owned many of the theaters the movies played in. 20th Century Fox owned theaters that were called "The Fox Theater" in each town where they owned one. The Fox Theater locations were sold off to chains decades ago. The old Mann Theater chain owned a former "Fox Theater" in Provo that stood on the same land where the McDonald's is on Cougar Way (Or whatever Bulldog Blvd is now called) near BYU's campus. IIRC, it was sold to McDonald's in the 80s because the McDonald's franchisee offered to buy the land for way more money than the theater chain could turn down.
