If you carefully analyzed Walker's career and concluded that he came up short, then fine. If Gammons gave one of his 10 spots to someone that he felt was more deserving on this year's ballot, then also fine. But in this case, Gammons came up with a statistic (more than 140 games played only once in his career) after seemingly ignoring it for 10 years, not to mention the 5 year waiting period for Walker to even appear on the ballot. So, Gammons had 15 years to study Walker's career. At least last year, he was a hall of famer in Gammons' mind. This year, not so much, based upon a statistic that was available at the push of a button for 15 years. And Gammons had spots on his ballot to spare!
I get that Coors Field is a tricky place to evaluate hitters. I respect the fact that Walker was a borderline hall of famer, as evidenced by the fact that we having this discussion in his final year of eligibility. But Gammons illustrates a lot of what is wrong with this process. Just makes no sense.
