If the goal was to be ranked, we'd do that better in a conference
We're not going to go 11-2 against an independent schedule. And even if we did, playing div2 schools late in season tank your SoS when everyone else is gaining interest and credibility in conference championship games.
There's some decent arguments for independence, but being ranked isn't one of them.
