I've always kept the hair on the top of my head cropped close even when I had more hair up there. I hate going to the barber etc and have always just cut my own hair. I've started just completely shaving it now bec it's far easier to manage and no clippings get everywhere like when I buzzed it.

There is no compensating going on with most of us. We just like having beards.
