other applications can't exist in parallel if they are as promising as advertised. In my opinion, alternative block chain applications got way over hyped by a combination of:

• whales trying to offload their cryptocurrency for real money
• tech journalists looking to ride the wave and not look uninformed
• FOMO
• corporations throwing out token "blockchain" applications for an easy publicity and stock boost
