Maybe because people didn't expect the Pac to be so bad.
From 2011-2017 Utah was 28-35 in the Pac. A winning percentage tied for 7th in the conference over that span. From 2012-2017, Whitt goes 7-11 against Rodriguez, Graham, and Mora.
They all get fired and Whitt goes 5-1 vs. their replacements. He wins two division titles without having to beat one single team that finished ranked in the AP top 25.
No question Whitt is a very good coach, but he's clearly taken advantage of playing in a very depleted Pac-12 South.
