Utah went to the sweet 16. Georgia Tech offered him a job with a seven year contract. Utah matched. Utah fans who bemoan the contract now would've gone crazy if Utah would have let him walk over money. While Utah needs to do much better Larry took over at absolute rock bottom. They were so bad when he got there. Having them in the Sweet Sixteen in four years was a miracle.
What will BYU do when Pope is offered a ton of money by someone? You have to decide if you think the coach is worth it and match. At the time Utah gave him that contract there was plenty of evidence to suggest Larry was worth the contract. I still think if (a big if) he can keep the core together and Lohner and Martinez are what they are hoping for Utah will make the tournament next year.
Also, Utah lost to Duke in the sweet 16. They lost to Gonzaga the following year in the round of 32.
