I'm frankly disgusted by this attitude that you present here. But let's use your arguments in the abortion context to see what it looks like.
"We're shutting down all of the productive members of society in order to protect the unproductive ones."
- asking pregnant women to give birth to a child they don't want is shutting down a productive member of society to protect an unproductive one
"If you're driven by emotion, you are quick to shout out that any economic loss is worth saving those lives."
- how much stronger would the economy be if abortions were easily accessible and not considered morally wrong? A lot more women would be in the workplace actively participating in driving up the economy rather than spending time at home with kids.
"You're advocating bringing hardship on 99% of Americans in order to protect the 1%."
- Childbirth is the ultimate hardship. It's often referred to as "the shadow of death." It's widely regarded to be among the most painful things a person can do, if not the most painful. Yet we ask women to undergo that hardship in order to protect the "unproductive."
To be clear, I'm not advocating abortion here. I'm very much anti-needless abortion ("needful" being only in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother's life is at risk). I'm just applying your logic in another circumstance to highlight how heartless it is.
