If we are overreacting, the biggest cost may not be to the economy now,
It may be that this overreaction will lead to an under reaction when a truly dangerous plague comes along.

The story of the boy who cried wolf doesn't end when the townsfolk catch on to his game and ignore him. It ends with all the sheep getting eaten.
