according to this, their smoking rate isn't much different from ours:

Greece is the only one with over 40% smoking. US and Italy are at 21 and 23 respectively.

If the really high smoking countries get hit especially hard, we'll know that that's a factor. I suspect it is a factor. But there's no reason to believe that the US is in a much better position than Italy on that one.

We are a bit younger, which hopefully makes a difference here.

they also apparently have more per capita hospital beds than we do. We have more critical care, but I'm not sure what that means for overall bed capacity.
