The guy who wrote about Joe for the new Yorker said the movie has been in the works for a while. I actually think the
show undermines the movie.
The guy also had some interesting I site in the whole thing and showed some thing left behind that made the murder for hire plot much more clear. Joe definitely did it and wasn't tricked as by Jeff as much as the show makes you think.
