It's a smaller difference as the base iPad has improved, but
my son got one for Christmas and it has been a great machine and I don't regret it.
The future proofing is important (a couple gen newer CPU chip A12 vs A10), the screen is much better (lamination, anti-glare, more pixels, true tone), better front facing camera (good for selfies/facetime/zoom.)
Generally its worth it if adults/teens will be using it. If its just the 6-11 set, get the regular iPad and it is fine.
