We were horribly prepared for this pandemic. The only reason Korea and Tiawan have handled this better is due to original SARS. I also think culturally their culture values not making others sick by wearing masks unlike Americans. We GET sick and we careless who we infect.

So we have a lot of critical care beds but they are spread out regionally. Virus's are predictable but often spread putting intense pressure at localized levels with extremely fast spread rates in terms of this virus. Thereforcdespite excellent health care facilities we are over whelmed. Coupled with lack of preparation for a pandemic.

We're playing from behind. This reduce the curve is helping slow this down so we can catch up.

We need massive amounts of masks, ventilators and beds in high stress areas. We needed better protection for healthcare workers. So that's why it looks so ugly now.
