Anyhow, the police show up on my former doorstep (now owned by a cousin) "looking for Hank Rearden, a short Asian guy." My cousin says "well Hank no longer lives here, but I can assure you he isn't a short asian guy." My cousin proceeded to call me and I contacted the police.

Apparently the car I sold to this girl (and failed to remove my plates on the promise she would do so immediately) was involved in a parking lot fender bender where the driver of my old car drove away instead of staying to find the owner of the car he hit. (I learned it was barely above a door ding) Two witnesses wrote down the license plate number and reported it along with a description of the driver to the police. Anyhow, the police were very understanding and I had the contact info for the girl who bought the car. I called her and told her what happened and that she needed to call the police. Thats when I learned her boyfriend fit the description of "short Asian guy"

So in the end it was mostly just an inconvenience, but simply removing your plates and having a dated "bill of sale" can save you in a similar situation.
