RE: This is depressing - societal breakdown in parts of Italy
1) Of course it affects everyone. Not sure I claimed otherwise. I'm well versed with data distributions and probability theory. It just affects smaller numbers in younger age groups, and they are more likely to recover. In a gaussian distribution, the numbers only approach zero away from the mean, they never go to zero.
2) Not sure where you are getting your estimate of 1/4 to 1/2 wouldn't be working. Seems completing unsubstantiated. We also wouldn't get it all at once. I'd like to see data to support your estimates.
3) I'm genuinely interested in such data. Would be good to know.
4) I absolutely agree. IF we get a treatment that works, lots of issues go away and we can get back on track. However, we can't plan on that yet. I want hydroxylchoroquine to work so much. The data isn't there yet though.

Two more points for you to think on. First, we have a far more integrated and global economy than we've had in the past. How much will that change our economic recovery versus times past? (No data, just an open question)
Next, what I'm trying to highlight is something you really didn't address. What we're doing here is unprecedented. We've basically shut everything in the world down, keeping people home against their will. People do not cope well with being told to stay home. I don't know you, but I have heard a number of people talk about "it will require sacrifice". It's easy to "sacrifice" when it's not your kids that might go hungry, when it's not you that might lose your house, your livelihood. I know that many people will die from this disease. It's awful. I could be one of them. But creating a depression is a real possibility. Fed estimates are as high as a 32% loss of jobs. The last time it took a world war to get us out of the depression. Those are extreme outlooks, but they are still possible.
