In fairness, many people’s reasoning seems to “My family’s is OK and I don’t
know anyone who is in an ICU or dead because of the virus, so it must not be a big deal. Everyone is overreacting!”
Basically the same logic that you complained about in your post, but in the opposite direction. And much more common in these here parts, TBH.
