China is a huge country, more like a continent. I believe a lot of the fault for
what happened there early on lies with local authorities in Wuhan and Hubei, who didn’t take it seriously or report it to the national government. Instead they tried to handle it on their own, and when that started to fail they tried to cover it up. This lasted for just a couple of weeks, maybe, but long enough to cause lots of damage.
