The one person I know who has died from this is also Ecuadorian. Two others I know are sick. One is the wife of the guy who passed away, who was my housekeeper a few years ago and always complained I was too skinny and didn't eat enough. The other is the boyfriend of my friend's daughter. We were eating sushi together about four weeks ago, and now he's in the hospital. He's only 25 or 26. Sounds like he's getting better, though, and they'd have sent him home if he were less well connected. His father is a doctor in the hospital in question.

My father had a CV scare this week, but it turns out it's a bladder infection that was causing pain and fever. That's obviously not great, either, but it could be worse.
